Mission Statement

In recognition of the present and future challenges confronting the urban Church and community, particularly African American congregations, Heritage Center for Religious Studies exists to equip men and women with the theoretical and practical foundations necessary for optimal, “cutting edge” service in Christian ministry.

The Heritage Journey

Since 1989, Heritage Center for Religious Studies has provided advanced biblical studies for adults interested in preparing themselves for ministry beyond the local Bible school level. In 1994, we engaged in a collaborative effort with Ashland Theological Seminary (Ashland, Ohio) to provide continuing education to ministers and laity through the Diploma of Theology in Black Church Studies program.

New Horizons

In 2002, Heritage Center for Religious Studies completed the initial phase of licensing and became fully recognized by the State of Michigan for the Diploma of Ministry and Certificate in Continuing Education programs. In 2010, the school achieved 501(c)(3) non-profit status as an educational institution and our strategic plan for accreditation continues to press forward.

Heritage Center now solely operates its own flagship programs with over 28 courses in the field of ministry and has more than 30 graduates. Offering four concentrations (Bible, Black Church/Ministry Studies, the Practice of Ministry, and Preaching), the Diploma of Ministry is an independent program designed to prepare students for entry into undergraduate ministry studies. The Certificate in Continuing Education is flexible with course requirements and appeals to those seeking a more generalized program of learning.

Statement of Faith

Heritage Center for Religious Studies is evangelical and ecumenical in scope. Our faculty and staff represent several mainline Protestant denominations and are committed to embracing the diversity present in the student body. In maintaining respect for individual differences, we have implemented a Statement of Faith to be observed by all faculty, staff and students:

  • We believe that there is one God, eternally existing in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  • We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God.
  • We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious death and atonement through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal and visible return in power and glory.
  • We believe that man was created in the image of God, and that Satan tempted him and man fell, and because of the exceeding sinfulness of human nature, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely necessary for salvation.
  • We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life, and by Whom the Church is empowered to carry out Christ's great commission: to teach and preach the Gospel among all nations.
  • We believe in the bodily resurrection of both the saved and the lost, those who are saved unto the resurrection of life and those who are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.
  • We believe that the entire program of Christian training is evangelical. It finds its reason for being, and its goal, in bringing the individual to a personal acceptance of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, in helping the Christian grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord, and in equipping Christians for more effective service.
